We perform tooth extractions in a clean, modern office using evidence-based techniques.
We’ll Make You as Comfortable as Possible
At South Rock Dental, we always prefer to save your natural tooth. However, when damage or decay are too extensive, teeth are impacted or there’s severe overcrowding, sometimes, an extraction is the best option.
If that’s the case, we have patient amenities, a caring team and sedation options to help you feel as comfortable as possible. As for the procedure itself, our dentist uses digital diagnostics and modern techniques to minimize trauma.
The Tooth Extraction Process
01
Come in for an Exam
We’ll take digital x-rays and a wellness scan to get the full picture of your oral health. Dr. Sundeep Chohan, General Dentist, will evaluate your diagnostic records and perform an exam. She’ll explain her diagnosis and proposed treatment plan in detail, go over your tooth replacement options and answer your questions.
02
Get Comfortable
We’ll set you up in a private treatment room and Dr. Chohan will administer local anesthesia, so you’ll be numb throughout the procedure. If you’re feeling anxious about the extraction, we can discuss sedation.
03
Have Your Tooth Extracted
Dr. Chohan will use special tools to carefully loosen the tooth and lift it out of the socket. Then, she’ll clean and disinfect the empty socket. In some cases, particularly if you’re planning to get a dental implant, she may place a bone graft. Lastly, if needed, she’ll use dissolvable stitches to close the area.
04
Let the Healing Begin
When your tooth extraction is finished, Dr. Chohan will give you post-operative instructions to follow to promote optimal healing. While the recovery time depends on several factors, including which tooth was extracted and the reason for the extraction, most patients feel back to normal within a few days.
Benefits Of
Tooth Extractions
Stops Pain
Once a severely infected or broken tooth is extracted, it will almost immediately stop causing pain.
Preserves Oral Health
Removing a damaged tooth prevents it from causing a domino effect of issues and helps you maintain good oral health.
Reduces Bacteria
Extracting a decayed tooth eliminates the infection, stops it from spreading and reduces the harmful bacteria in your mouth.
When is a tooth extraction necessary?
A tooth extraction is needed when a severely decayed, infected or damaged tooth can’t be saved. Removing it stops the infection and prevents the tooth from affecting the surrounding teeth. In other cases, teeth need to be extracted to alleviate crowding before starting orthodontic treatment or because they’re impacted (stuck under the bone) and pose a risk of future complications.
Does getting a tooth extracted hurt?
No, tooth extractions don’t hurt because they’re performed while you’re numb from local anesthesia. The only thing you’ll feel during the procedure is some pressure. If you’re anxious about treatment, ask us about our sedation options!
What is tooth extraction recovery like?
Dr. Sundeep Chohan, General Dentist, will provide you with detailed pre- and post-op instructions. Following the extraction, you’ll bite down on sterile gauze for 10 to 20 minutes to control bleeding at the extraction site.
While it depends on several factors, including which tooth was extracted, you may experience mild to moderate discomfort when the anesthesia wears off. This will only last for a few days. Swelling is also common. Taking an over-the-counter pain reliever like ibuprofen and holding ice packs on your face will help with both pain and swelling.
Stick with a soft foods diet for several days. To promote clotting, be sure to avoid using a straw, vaping and smoking during your recovery period.
