How to Handle Common Dental Emergencies

Traumatic Dental Injuries

For a loosened or displaced tooth, use gentle pressure to hold the tooth in place. If your tooth was fractured or chipped, try to find the pieces of it, because we might be able to reattach them temporarily.

If a tooth is knocked out, gently pick it up by the crown without touching the root. Carefully rinse it off with water and put it back into the socket with the tooth facing in the correct direction. Hold the tooth in place with gentle pressure.

If you can’t get it back into the socket, keep the tooth in your mouth between your cheek and your gums. For young kids who could swallow it, store the tooth in a container with cold milk or saliva.

In any case, call us right away, as seeing a dentist within an hour or two increases the odds the tooth can be saved. If you experience uncontrollable bleeding, get medical attention immediately.

toothache care

Toothache

Tooth pain is always a sign that you should visit the dentist. The earlier the cause of your toothache is diagnosed and treated, the easier, less invasive and more affordable treatment will be.

If you’re experiencing an acute or persistent toothache, call our office to schedule an appointment. In the meantime, keep the area clean by gently brushing and flossing. You can also try taking an over-the-counter pain reliever, if needed, and/or swishing with warm saltwater.

Gum and Soft Tissue Problems

A periodontal abscess is a pus-filled sac on the gums that looks like a pimple. An abscess is caused by an infection and it can result in severe pain, a fever and facial swelling. If you have an abscess, you’ll need immediate attention, so give our office a call.

For an injury, burn or accidental bite to the lips, lining of the cheeks, gums or tongue, swish with warm saltwater to get relief. If you’re bleeding, press a clean, damp piece of gauze or a towel against the site for 10 to 15 minutes. If the bleeding still isn’t under control, seek medical attention.

If you have food or another foreign body stuck underneath your gums, use dental floss or a floss pick to try to gently work it out. If that’s not successful, make an appointment with Dr. Chohan to ensure your gums don’t get infected or damaged.
