How Often Do I Need a Dental Exam and Cleaning?

The goal of preventive exams and cleanings is to prevent oral health problems entirely or detect and treat them in their earliest stages when they’re easier and more affordable to fix. That’s why, for most people, it’s recommended they visit the dentist every six months.

That said, this can vary depending on your oral health and needs. Our South Surrey dentist might recommend more frequent visits if you have certain dental problems or you struggle with homecare.

Are Dental X-Rays Safe?

Yes, dental x-rays are safe. In fact, they’re critical for helping to diagnose tooth decay, gum disease and pathology that can’t be seen with the naked eye.

Even traditional x-rays only emit a small amount of radiation and the benefits outweigh the risks. However, our digital x-rays make things even safer by exposing patients to up to 80% less radiation.

What Can I Expect at My First Appointment?

When you visit South Rock Dental, you’ll receive a warm welcome from our friendly team. You can get a cup of coffee or some water and relax in our beautiful reception area.

We set aside an hour and a half for your first dental exam and cleaning. When it’s time for your appointment, we’ll take digital x-rays, panoramic x-rays and a wellness scan, so we can see all of your teeth from every angle. If there’s time, we’ll also snap some digital photos of your smile.

Then, an experienced hygienist or Dr. Chohan herself will perform a gentle but thorough cleaning. When that’s finished, Dr. Sundeep Chohan, General Dentist, will examine you, go over your wellness scan, answer your questions and provide personalized recommendations to maximize your oral health. If any issues are diagnosed, Dr. Chohan will work with you to create a manageable, sequenced treatment plan.

Do You Treat Children at South Rock Dental?

We do! As a South Surrey and White Rock family dentist, we treat patients of all ages, including infants, children and teenagers. Thanks to our digital technology, distractions like TVs and iPads and gentle approach, kids will feel comfortable and at ease.
