Beyond Teeth

Dentists aren’t just experts in teeth, they also have an in-depth understanding of the oral and facial anatomy as a whole. That’s why dental exams are incredibly important for the early detection of abnormalities and diseases of the mouth, head and neck.

At South Rock Dental, Dr. Sundeep Chohan, General Dentist, offers oral pathology diagnoses. Whether a suspicious mass on the jaw or a lesion inside of the mouth, she can help you get answers, so you can receive the treatment you need.

Signs of an Oral Pathology:

While many conditions, such as a fibroma or most cases of leukoplakia, are benign, it’s still important to see a dentist if you experience changes, including:

  • Red or white patches in the mouth
  • Trouble chewing or swallowing
  • A sore throat or hoarseness that doesn’t seem to go away
  • Sores or ulcers in the mouth that bleed easily and don’t heal
  • Persistent swelling of oral soft tissues
  • Lumps or bumps in the mouth or on the jaw or neck

What conditions do you screen for at South Rock Dental?

Dr. Sundeep Chohan, General Dentist, screens patients for:

  • Oral Cancer – Though the majority of bumps and lesions are benign, sometimes, they’re a sign of oral cancer. Unfortunately, oral cancer is often caught in its late stages, which is why it has a pretty high mortality rate. The good news is early detection significantly improves the prognosis.
  • Leukoplakia – Leukoplakia, a condition that causes white patches inside of the mouth, is usually benign. Occasionally, however, the lesions can be precancerous.
  • Fibroma – This tumor-like mass feels like a lump in the lining of your mouth. It’s benign.
  • Lichen Planus – Oral lichen planus is a chronic inflammatory condition. It presents in a variety of ways, including swollen, red soft tissues, lacy, white patches and open sores. Some patients experience burning and pain.
  • Pregnancy Tumors – Pregnant women can develop benign swelling of gum tissue caused by hormonal changes.
  • Mucous Membrane Pemphigoid – This refers to a group of rare autoimmune disorders that target the mucous membranes. It’s not life threatening but can result in oral lesions.
